Manchester United are among the most heavily backed clubs in the Premier League, so you would expect their win prices to be squeezed. I wanted to see how their results and the returns for backers have shifted across three eras, using 798 league matches with prices from 2005/06 to 2025/26. For match-by-match picks, see today's 1X2 tips. This file is the background I read first.
The win rate has fallen from 69.9% in the first era to 47.7% in the latest. Even so, backing United blind returned +1.3% per bet at the standard price, while every other Premier League favourite returned −2.7%. The prices gave them an average 55.0% chance of winning against an actual 57.8%, so the market has tended to underrate them slightly. The most interesting pocket is United as underdog: across 129 matches, that returned +9.9%.
Exhibit AUnited's win rate has fallen in each successive era
Each era covers 266 league matches, which makes the comparison fair. From 2005/06 to 2011/12 United won 69.9%, drew 16.9% and lost 13.2%. In the middle era that became 55.6%, 22.9% and 21.4%. In the latest era it is 47.7%, 24.4% and 27.8%, so losses now outnumber draws.
If you think in fair odds, the recent win frequency puts a fair United win price close to the 1.80–2.19 band. That is a long way from the short odds-on prices the first era justified. Treat any price built on the old reputation with caution.

| Win | Draw | Loss | |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2005/06–2011/12 | 69.9% | 16.9% | 13.2% |
| 2012/13–2018/19 | 55.6% | 22.9% | 21.4% |
| 2019/20–2025/26 | 47.7% | 24.4% | 27.8% |
Draws are a quieter trend. Across the whole period United drew 21.4% of league games against 23.0% priced, while other Premier League matches in the same seasons finished level 24.5% of the time. They have drawn less often than the average side, and slightly less often than the market expected.
Exhibit BSeason returns swing hard, profitable in 13 of 21
Backing United to win every match showed a profit in 13 of 21 seasons. The shape of the line matters more than that count. The early seasons ran small and steady at 7.5%, 7.8%, 3.2%, 5.6% and 5.2%, with just one dip into the red in 2010/11.
The latest era looks completely different. Returns went from −27% to 21.5%, and then from the worst season, 2024/25 at −33.8%, to the best, 2025/26 at +32.5%. Those two came back to back.
Gaps in the line are seasons missing from the data.

| 2023/24 | −2.7% |
| 2024/25 | −33.8% |
| 2025/26 | 32.5% |
This is my one big caveat. Past returns describe what happened at the quoted prices, not what comes next, and squads, managers and the way prices are set have all changed over two decades. A strong recent season tells you the market mispriced that squad, not that it will keep doing so.
Exhibit CHome underdog United have paid, away favourites have not
As favourite at home, United won 69.9% of 365 matches against 65.4% priced. That returned +2.7% at the standard price and +5.9% at the best price. As favourite away, they won 55.8% of 301 against 54.8% priced. That still returned −4.0% at the standard price, and the best price only brought it back to −0.3%.
The standout row is United as home underdog: 37.5% won against 26.8% priced, returning +32.1% per bet. That comes from just 32 matches, so I read it as a hint rather than a rule.
Favourite = shorter win price than the opponent. Match counts in brackets.

| Standard price | Best price | |
|---|---|---|
| Favourite at home (365) | +2.7% | +5.9% |
| Favourite away (301) | −4.0% | −0.3% |
| Underdog at home (32) | +32.1% | +39.6% |
| Underdog away (97) | +2.6% | +7.9% |
As away underdog, the price was almost exactly right: 25.8% won against 25.9% priced. The +2.6% return grows to +7.9% at the best price. Here the edge came mostly from shopping around for a better price, not from the market misjudging United.
Exhibit DThe 1.50–1.79 band is where markets underrated United
Splitting by United's own win price, most bands sit close to fair. At 1.50–1.79, though, United were priced at 59.3% and won 66.8% of 193 matches. That gap of +7.5 points is larger than its ±6.6 range, which makes it the clearest signal on the chart.
At odds under 1.30 they won 82.8% against 78.6% priced, and at 3.00 or more they won 26.8% against 23.4%. The only band where they fell short was 2.20–2.99, at 35.8% against 38.3%.
Whiskers on the actual rate are 95% ranges; small bands are less certain.
View the data: man united win rate: priced vs actual
| Priced | Actually won | 95% range | |
|---|---|---|---|
| <1.30 (116 matches) | 78.6% | 82.8% | ±6.9 |
| 1.30–1.49 (146 matches) | 69.7% | 70.5% | ±7.4 |
| 1.50–1.79 (193 matches) | 59.3% | 66.8% | ±6.6 |
| 1.80–2.19 (126 matches) | 49.6% | 50.8% | ±8.7 |
| 2.20–2.99 (120 matches) | 38.3% | 35.8% | ±8.6 |
| 3.00+ (97 matches) | 23.4% | 26.8% | ±8.8 |
The other gaps sit inside their ranges, so I treat them as noise. The band I watch closely is that 1.50–1.79 one, where United have been more reliable than the price implied.
Dossier verdict
Case closed- Always take the best price
Backing United blind returned +1.3% per bet at the standard price but +5.1% at the best price. Away as favourite, the best price turned −4.0% into −0.3%.
- Look hard at 1.50–1.79
This is the one band where United clearly beat their price, winning 66.8% against 59.3% priced across 193 matches.
- Price the current side
The latest era's 47.7% win rate and its −33.8% to +32.5% swings mean reputation is not value. Judge each price against what this squad is actually doing.
