Correct Score punishes lazy thinking about big clubs. Knowing Manchester United usually win tells you very little about how they win, and the scoreline is the whole bet. So I built this file around one question: how do United's final scores change against top, middle and bottom-third opponents, and from each half-time score?
The headline answer is that the opponent matters more than the badge. Over 798 Premier League matches the 1-0 win is the most common score at 11.2%, but against the top third a 0-0 draw leads instead, and against the bottom third United won by two or more 42.8% of the time. I keep this file open alongside my exact score predictions page whenever United are playing.
Exhibit AOpponent strength reshapes United's winning margins
This chart splits every result into four bands: won by two or more, won by one, drawn and lost. The rows run from venue to opponent strength, and the spread from top to bottom is wide. Against top-third sides United won by two or more in just 16.2% and lost 34.7%. Against bottom-third sides those figures become 42.8% and 14.0%.
Venue tells a similar story. Two-goal-plus wins made up 40.4% of home matches and 23.1% of away matches, while the one-goal win barely moves, at 26.8% and 25.3%.
Opponent thirds use the final table built from the results; incomplete seasons are left out.
View the data: man united winning margins by venue and opponent
| Won by 2+ | Won by 1 | Draw | Lost | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Home (n=399) | 40.4% | 26.8% | 17.5% | 15.3% |
| Away (n=399) | 23.1% | 25.3% | 25.3% | 26.3% |
| vs top third (n=216) | 16.2% | 23.6% | 25.5% | 34.7% |
| vs middle third (n=290) | 32.1% | 27.9% | 22.8% | 17.2% |
| vs bottom third (n=292) | 42.8% | 26.0% | 17.1% | 14.0% |
What I take from this is that the one-goal win is United's constant and the comfortable win is conditional. It needs a weaker opponent or home ground before it becomes a serious part of the picture.
Exhibit BNarrow wins dominate United's most common league scores
The bars rank United's ten most frequent scorelines from their side. The 1-0 win leads at 11.2%, followed by the 2-1 win at 10.2% and the 2-0 win at 10.0%, with the 1-1 draw close behind at 9.5%. After that the shares fall away quickly: the 0-0 draw sits at 6.4% and the 3-0 win at 6.1%.
Those ten scores cover 73.9% of matches. The remaining 26.1% is scattered across 29 further scorelines, which is why I rarely look beyond the top handful.
The ten scores shown cover 73.9% of matches.
View the data: man united's most common league scores
| Share of 798 Premier League matches, Man United's goals first | |
|---|---|
| 1-0 win | 11.2% |
| 2-1 win | 10.2% |
| 2-0 win | 10.0% |
| 1-1 draw | 9.5% |
| 0-0 draw | 6.4% |
| 3-0 win | 6.1% |
| 0-1 defeat | 5.8% |
| 3-1 win | 5.6% |
| 1-2 defeat | 4.6% |
| 2-2 draw | 4.5% |
The split matters here. Against the bottom third the 1-0 win is still the most common result at 12.0% of 292, even though big margins are frequent. Against the top third the 0-0 draw takes over at 10.6% of 216, which suits a cautious, low-event reading of those matches.
Exhibit CHalf-time leads rarely slip, but 0-0 stays open
This table follows each common half-time score to its final outcome. From 1-0 at the break, which happened in 195 matches, United won 83.6% and lost only 1.5%, with 1-0 and 2-0 the leading finishes. From 2-0 they won 96.4%, and 3-0 was the most common final score at 27.7%, ahead of 2-0 itself.
Level breaks are far less settled. From 0-0, the most common half-time score with 217 matches, United won 44.2% and the game finished 0-0 in 23.5%. From 1-1 they won 42.0%, with 2-1 the top finish at 24.7%.
| Half-time | Matches | Top final score | Next | Won | Lost |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0-0 | 217 | 0-0 · 23.5% | 1-0 · 21.2% | 44.2% | 21.2% |
| 1-0 | 195 | 1-0 · 22.1% | 2-0 · 20.0% | 83.6% | 1.5% |
| 0-1 | 102 | 0-1 · 18.6% | 1-1 · 14.7% | 19.6% | 56.9% |
| 2-0 | 83 | 3-0 · 27.7% | 2-0 · 19.3% | 96.4% | 0.0% |
| 1-1 | 81 | 2-1 · 24.7% | 1-1 · 21.0% | 42.0% | 21.0% |
Trailing 0-1 is where the picture turns. Across 102 such matches United won 19.6% and lost 56.9%, so I treat an early deficit as a real change in the match rather than a temporary blip.
Exhibit DThe 2-1 win lands more often than prices imply
Fair odds here are simply one divided by how often each score has landed, set against a price model built from margin-free 1X2 and goals odds. The clearest gap is the 2-1 win: fair odds 9.85 against 11.40 from the model, and a share of 10.2% compared with 7.5% for other Premier League clubs. The 1-0 win shows a smaller version of the same pattern, at 8.97 against 9.43.
The 1-1 draw goes the other way, with fair odds 10.50 against a model figure of 9.97. The 3-0 win is also slightly shorter in the model, at 15.53 against 16.29.
| Score | Matches | Share | Fair odds | Price-model odds | League avg |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1-0 win | 89 | 11.2% | 8.97 | 9.43 | 8.3% |
| 2-1 win | 81 | 10.2% | 9.85 | 11.40 | 7.5% |
| 2-0 win | 80 | 10.0% | 9.97 | 10.12 | 6.3% |
| 1-1 draw | 76 | 9.5% | 10.50 | 9.97 | 10.8% |
| 0-0 draw | 51 | 6.4% | 15.65 | 16.61 | 7.2% |
| 3-0 win | 49 | 6.1% | 16.29 | 15.53 | 3.3% |
| 0-1 defeat | 46 | 5.8% | 17.35 | 16.39 | 8.6% |
| 3-1 win | 45 | 5.6% | 17.73 | 18.48 | 3.8% |
League avg = share of Premier League team-matches (other clubs) ending in that score from the team's side.
The main caveat is that real correct-score prices are not in this data, so I cannot test returns, only compare against these yardsticks. A single scoreline at around 10% also carries a range of roughly ±2 to ±3 points, so small gaps deserve caution.
Dossier verdict
Case closed- Respect top-third stalemates
Against top-third opponents the 0-0 draw is the most common score at 10.6%, and United lost 34.7%. Keep low-scoring draws and narrow defeats in the frame rather than defaulting to a home-style win.
- Widen margins against strugglers
Versus the bottom third United won by two or more 42.8% of the time. Still, the 1-0 win led at 12.0%, so cover the narrow win alongside the bigger margins.
- Compare 2-1 against the model
The 2-1 win shows fair odds of 9.85 against 11.40 from the price model. If a bookmaker's price sits nearer the model figure, it is worth a closer look.
