Newcastle look like a club that should attract cards: a loud crowd, a physical reputation and plenty of fiery afternoons. I wanted to test that against the record, so this file covers 722 Premier League games with booking data from 2005/06–2025/26, split by venue, by opponent strength and by season. If you want the day-to-day picks, my free yellow card tips page is where those live. This is the background reading.
The headline is that Newcastle games run slightly hotter than the league. Over 4.5 yellows landed 29.6% of the time across all 722 games, against 25.8% for Premier League matches in the same seasons. The more interesting part is who gets booked. At St James' Park it is mostly the visitors, and away from home Newcastle take more cards than they hand out.
Exhibit ASt James' Park pushes cards onto the visiting side
This table is the core of the file. At home Newcastle averaged 1.57 yellows a game while opponents averaged 2.17. Total yellows came in at 3.75, and over 4.5 landed in 32.4% of games. Away, the picture flips: Newcastle averaged 1.81 against 1.53 for the hosts, and the total dropped to 3.35 with over 4.5 at 26.9%.
For a bettor, that means asking a different question depending on venue. At home I'm looking at the away side's card line and the match total. On the road I'm more interested in Newcastle's own count.
| Venue | Games | Newcastle Y/g | Opp Y/g | Total Y/g | Over 4.5 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Home | 361 | 1.57 | 2.17 | 3.75 | 32.4% |
| Away | 361 | 1.81 | 1.53 | 3.35 | 26.9% |
| All games | 722 | 1.69 | 1.85 | 3.55 | 29.6% |
I read the home crowd as part of this. A noisy ground puts visiting players on the back foot and may make referees quicker to act. I can't prove that last point, because these records carry no referee names, so officiating and the club's own discipline are tangled together throughout this file.
Exhibit BBig Six games barely move the total but change the split
The common assumption is that games against Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham are where the cards fly. Across 228 games against that group, Newcastle matches averaged 3.58 yellows, against 3.53 in 494 games against everyone else. Over 4.5 hit 31.1% (fair odds 3.21) versus 28.9% (fair odds 3.45). That is a small difference in frequency, not a different market. Those fair odds are simply one divided by the hit rate. I have no historical card prices for these games, so they are benchmarks to hold a price against, not proof the market got anything wrong.
The dumbbell shows where the split becomes more useful. Hosting the Big Six, Newcastle averaged 1.80 yellows to the visitors' 2.12. Against the rest at home Newcastle were much cleaner at 1.47, while opponents averaged 2.20. Away at the Big Six, Newcastle took 1.84 against just 1.39 for the hosts, the widest gap in Newcastle's direction on the chart.

| Newcastle | Opponent | |
|---|---|---|
| vs Big Six, home (114 games) | 1.8 | 2.12 |
| vs Big Six, away (114 games) | 1.84 | 1.39 |
| vs Rest, home (247 games) | 1.47 | 2.2 |
| vs Rest, away (247 games) | 1.8 | 1.6 |
My reading is that Newcastle defend more when they visit the big clubs, and defending deep brings late challenges and tactical fouls. Sample size is the limit here. Each Big Six venue split rests on only 114 games, so I treat these as leanings rather than firm rules.
Exhibit CNewcastle usually take one or two yellows, rarely four
Team card lines are priced on the shape of this chart, so the spread matters more than the average of 1.69. Newcastle finished without a yellow in 17.7% of matches, with exactly one in 30.1% and two in 28.3%. Three came up in 15.2%, and four or more in just 8.7%.

| Share of games by Newcastle yellows | |
|---|---|
| 0 yellows | 17.7% |
| 1 yellow | 30.1% |
| 2 yellows | 28.3% |
| 3 yellows | 15.2% |
| 4 or more | 8.7% |
The tail is thin. If a price on Newcastle collecting a big card count looks generous, this chart is the reminder that heavy nights are the exception. At the other end, a card-free game happens often enough that I wouldn't dismiss it, particularly at home, where they average 1.57.
Exhibit DNewcastle's card rate swings by season, lately below average
The season line compares Newcastle with the average Premier League team. The gaps at 2009/10 and 2016/17 are the seasons they spent outside the top flight. Their most-booked season was 2021/22 at 2.08 per game, and the cleanest were 2013/14 and 2017/18 at 1.37. In most of the earlier seasons Newcastle ran at or above the league line.
More recently the league has caught up. In 2025/26 Newcastle averaged 1.66 against 1.87 for the average team.

| 2024/25 | 1.79 | 2.02 |
| 2025/26 | 1.66 | 1.87 |
This is why I give recent seasons more weight than the long-run figure. The league average has climbed and Newcastle's hasn't kept pace, so a file built on the full span could overstate how card-prone they are now compared with their opponents.
Dossier verdict
Case closed- Watch the visitors' line
At St James' Park, opponents averaged 2.17 yellows to Newcastle's 1.57. In home games, the away side's card count is usually where the bookings pile up.
- Flip it on the road
Away from home, Newcastle averaged 1.81 to the hosts' 1.53. At Big Six grounds that became 1.84 to 1.39, so Newcastle's own line deserves the attention.
- Hold prices against 3.21
Over 4.5 yellows in Big Six games has a fair price of 3.21 from a 31.1% hit rate. Anything much shorter is paying for a reputation the totals don't strongly support, and the referee still needs checking separately.
