Chelsea Yellow Cards Stats: Over 3.5, 4.5 and 5.5 Card Lines
Chelsea league games produce more bookings than the Premier League norm on every common line. Here is the card file I check before any Chelsea fixture.

Chelsea have a reputation as a big, controlled side, so I expected their league games to be tidier than average. Across 798 Premier League matches with booking data, the opposite is true. Chelsea games averaged 3.65 yellow cards against a league average of 3.35, and every common total line lands more often than the league norm.
The headline for me is over 3.5 yellows. It came up in 50.8% of Chelsea games against 43.9% across the league, which puts fair odds at 1.97. This file sits alongside my yellow card tips page and covers four things: the line-by-line record, the home and away split, how the totals spread out and how the averages have moved season by season.
Exhibit AChelsea beat the league rate on every card line
The table runs from over 2.5 up to over 6.5. Each row shows Chelsea's hit rate, a 95% range, fair odds and the Premier League rate. Over 2.5 landed in 68.0% of Chelsea games (league 64.3%), over 3.5 in 50.8% and over 4.5 in 32.3%. Those give fair odds of 1.47, 1.97 and 3.09.
I'd look at the gap column first. It peaks at +6.9 points on over 3.5 and holds at +6.3 on over 4.5, so the extra bookings aren't hiding in one freak tail. Even over 5.5, at 17.9% against 13.7%, keeps the same pattern.
| Line | Chelsea games | 95% range | Fair odds | PL average | Gap |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Over 2.5 | 68.0% | ±3.2 | 1.47 | 64.3% | +3.7 |
| Over 3.5 | 50.8% | ±3.5 | 1.97 | 43.9% | +6.9 |
| Over 4.5 | 32.3% | ±3.2 | 3.09 | 26.0% | +6.3 |
| Over 5.5 | 17.9% | ±2.7 | 5.58 | 13.7% | +4.2 |
| Over 6.5 | 10.4% | ±2.1 | 9.61 | 6.3% | +4.1 |
One honest limit applies to the whole file. No card prices exist for these games, so the fair odds are frequency benchmarks rather than proof that any bookmaker has priced Chelsea wrongly. I treat them as the number a price has to beat before I take an interest.
Exhibit BAway games drive the over count more than Stamford Bridge
The venue split tilts clearly in one direction. Over 3.5 yellows landed in 46.6% of Chelsea home games and 54.9% of away games. Over 4.5 hit in 29.6% of 399 home games against 35.1% of 399 away.
Home games still sit slightly above the league on most lines, but Chelsea look properly card-heavy on the road. My hunch is that home crowds help home sides draw fouls. The data can show the gap, but it can't prove that reason.
View the data: over-line hit rate by venue
| O2.5 | O3.5 | O4.5 | O5.5 | O6.5 | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Chelsea at home (399) | 64.2% | 46.6% | 29.6% | 15.8% | 9.0% |
| Chelsea away (399) | 71.9% | 54.9% | 35.1% | 20.1% | 11.8% |
| PL average (7,980) | 64.3% | 43.9% | 26.0% | 13.7% | 6.3% |
The team split adds context. Chelsea themselves averaged 1.72 yellows per game, while their opponents picked up 1.93. Much of the volume comes from the other dressing room, which fits sides sitting deep and fouling to slow Chelsea down.
Exhibit CChelsea games carry a fatter seven-plus tail
The totals break down like this: 32.0% of Chelsea games finished with 0–2 yellows, 35.7% with 3–4, 21.9% with 5–6 and 10.4% with 7 or more. Across the league the same split was 35.7%, 38.3%, 19.8% and 6.3%.
The middle buckets are fairly close. The real difference is at the top, where Chelsea's 7+ share is much bigger than the league's. That matters for the higher lines, where over 6.5 carries fair odds of 9.61 against a league hit rate of 6.3%.

| 0–2 | 3–4 | 5–6 | 7+ | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Chelsea games | 32.0% | 35.7% | 21.9% | 10.4% |
| PL average | 35.7% | 38.3% | 19.8% | 6.3% |
The chart also cuts the other way. Nearly a third of Chelsea games still end with two or fewer bookings, so I never treat the over as a given just because the badge is Chelsea's.
Exhibit DRecent seasons have pushed Chelsea card counts sharply higher
The season line is where I'm most careful. Chelsea games ranged from 2.66 yellows per match in 2020/21 to 5.18 in 2023/24, and the most recent seasons sit well above the long-run 3.65.
The league has risen too, but that doesn't explain everything. In 2025/26 Chelsea games averaged 4.42 against a league average of 3.75, so they are still running clearly above the wider trend.

| 2024/25 | 5.11 | 4.05 |
| 2025/26 | 4.42 | 3.75 |
Each season is only 38 games, so one year can swing a lot. The records also carry no referee names, which means I can't separate officiating from Chelsea's own discipline. I'd read the recent rise as a nudge, not a new baseline.
Dossier verdict
Case closed- Start from over 3.5
Chelsea games went over 3.5 yellows in 50.8% of matches, which gives fair odds of 1.97. I'd only look at a price that sits comfortably above that benchmark.
- Weight the venue first
Over 4.5 hit in 35.1% of away games against 29.6% at Stamford Bridge. I'd lean towards the over on the road and stay more selective at home.
- Blend recent and long-run
Seasons like 2023/24 at 5.18 per game show the ceiling, but single seasons are small samples. I'd weigh recent form against the long-run 3.65 rather than chase one year.
