Atlético Madrid Under 2.5 Stats: How the Goals Dried Up and Returned
Atlético's reputation says under, and for one long stretch the numbers agreed. Across the full record, the market has mostly caught up, and the edge now sits in the details.

- How often do Atlético Madrid league matches stay under 2.5 goals, in which era did the unders pay, and how do the results and halves look?

Atlético Madrid carry the most famous low-scoring reputation in La Liga, so this file tests it. Across 760 league matches from 2005/06 to 2025/26, 47.5% finished with three or more goals, slightly below the La Liga rate of 49.5% over the same seasons. That gap is smaller than the reputation suggests.
The more useful answer is about timing. The unders paid handsomely in one era and cost money in the other two, and backing every under across the full record returned −4.2%. If you want the day-to-day picks rather than the club history, my total goals tips page is where they live. This page is the background I check before any Atlético match.
Exhibit AAtlético's over rate collapsed, then climbed back
The season line tells the story in the title. Atlético were an over side early in the record, peaking at 65.8% in 2008/09, then the rate slid steadily to a low of 26.3% in 2018/19. Since then it has drifted back towards the league line, and in 2025/26 their matches went over 50.0% of the time, level with La Liga at 50.0%.
Atlético matches beat the La Liga over 2.5 rate in only 7 of 20 seasons, so leaning under has been the right shape more often than not. But the size of that lean changed a great deal from one period to the next.
One season = 30-38 matches, so single seasons swing widely. Seasons not in the record: 2006/07.

One season is only 30 to 38 matches, so I never read a single year as a trend on its own. The record also lacks 2006/07, so treat the early run with that gap in mind.
Exhibit BThe under paid in one era and lost in two
This is the chart I'd bookmark. In 2012/13–2018/19, over 2.5 landed in 40.2% of matches against 48.3% priced, and backing the under returned +9.2% across 266 matches. The market kept pricing Atlético like a normal La Liga side while the defence was doing something far from normal.
The other eras undo that. In 2005/06–2011/12 the under returned −17.2%, with overs landing 56.1% against 51.8% priced. In 2019/20–2025/26 the over landed 47.4% against 47.2% priced, and both sides lost money: −5.7% on the over, −6.6% on the under.

|---|---|---|
| 2005/06–2011/12 (228) | −0.2% | −17.2% |
| 2012/13–2018/19 (266) | −21.7% | +9.2% |
| 2019/20–2025/26 (266) | −5.7% | −6.6% |
| All seasons | −9.7% | −4.2% |
My main caveat sits here. These prices come from one major bookmaker, the timing of those prices shifted over the years, and returns a few points either side of zero can come from chance alone. None of this is a system; it is a record of when the market was slow and when it wasn't.
Exhibit CAway first halves are where Atlético matches go quiet
Atlético matches averaged 1.15 first-half goals and 1.48 second-half goals, so 56.1% of the goals came after the break. That is a familiar pattern, but the home and away split is sharper than the headline.
Away, the first half went over 1.5 goals in 30.3% of matches, under the league's 33.3%, and the second half went over 1.5 in 38.4% against a La Liga figure of 44.3%. At home both halves run slightly above the league.
| Half | Goals per match | Over 0.5 | Over 1.5 | La Liga over 1.5 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| First half, home | 1.20 | 70.5% | 35.3% | 33.3% |
| First half, away | 1.11 | 66.1% | 30.3% | 33.3% |
| Second half, home | 1.59 | 80.3% | 47.4% | 44.3% |
| Second half, away | 1.36 | 76.6% | 38.4% | 44.3% |
The away overall rate of 41.6% across 380 matches fits that picture. Atlético on the road are the version that matches the reputation.
Exhibit DHigh-scoring home games usually mean an Atlético win
In 203 home overs, Atlético won 78.8% and drew just 4.9%. When an Atlético home match opens up, it has usually been Atlético doing the scoring. Away overs are far more even, with 47.5% wins and 39.9% defeats across 158 matches.
Unders are where the draws live: 31.6% of home unders and 36.9% of away unders ended level. A tight Atlético match leaves the result open in a way a high-scoring home match rarely does.
Row label shows the number of matches.
View the data: what the result looks like in overs and unders
| Atlético won | Draw | Atlético lost | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Overs at home (203) | 78.8% | 4.9% | 16.3% |
| Overs away (158) | 47.5% | 12.7% | 39.9% |
| Unders at home (177) | 56.5% | 31.6% | 11.9% |
| Unders away (222) | 39.2% | 36.9% | 23.9% |
For bettors pairing markets, this matters. An Atlético home over has mostly travelled with an Atlético win, while an away under has carried plenty of draw risk.
Dossier verdict
Case closed- Price against today's market
The market priced Atlético overs at 48.9% on average against a real rate of 47.5%, which is close. Only back the under when your own read beats the price, not because of the reputation.
- Lean under on the road
Away matches went over just 41.6% of the time, and away second halves trailed the league clearly. This is the split where the old Atlético profile has held up best.
- Respect the recent era
In 2019/20–2025/26 the over landed 47.4% against 47.2% priced, and blanket unders returned −6.6%. Treat the profitable middle era as history, not a template.
