Newcastle are a club I've spent a lot of evenings on, because their HT/FT record doesn't look the same at home and away. This file covers 722 Premier League matches from 2005/06โ2025/26, split evenly at 361 home and 361 away, set against 6,498 other league matches from the same seasons. If you want the daily selections, my free HT/FT tips page carries those. This file is the background reading I'd want open before Newcastle kick off.
The headline answer is that Newcastle's away problem isn't holding leads. They turned 71.4% of away half-time leads into wins, level with the league. The gap opens when they go in level. Away from home only 17.7% of those games become wins, well short of the league's 27.6%. Most of what follows comes back to that one point.
Exhibit ALose/Lose is Newcastle's most common away result
This chart ranks all nine HT/FT outcomes across 361 away matches. Lose/Lose sits on top at 31.0%, with Draw/Lose next at 18.3% and Win/Win third at 16.6%. Draw/Draw comes up 13.9% of the time, which makes it a real part of the away picture rather than an afterthought.
The tail is thin. Lose/Win, the full turnaround, happened just 7 matches out of 361, or 1.9%. Win/Lose sits at 2.8%. On the road, Newcastle's away games rarely swing all the way from one result to the other.
Club perspective: Win/Win = led at half-time and won.

For a bettor, the fair price on any of these is simply one divided by the rate. The rarer the outcome, the longer the break-even price has to be before it makes sense.
Exhibit BAway draws at the break tip towards defeat
Here each HT/FT result is shown as Newcastle's rate minus the league rate, home and away side by side. The away column shows the pattern. Draw/Lose runs +3.8 points above the league, Lose/Lose +3.3, while Draw/Win is the biggest shortfall at โ4.3. When Newcastle are level at half-time on the road, the second half goes against them more often than it does for a typical away side.
Home is close to the reverse. Draw/Win is their largest gain there at +4.1 points, and Draw/Draw runs +2.1. The odd one out is Win/Win at home, โ3.6 against the league. So they lead at the break at home less often than you'd expect, but they're good at turning level home games into wins.
League = other clubs at the same venue, same seasons.

| Win/Lose | +0.7 pts | +0.2 pts |
| Draw/Lose | โ0.7 pts | +3.8 pts |
| Lose/Lose | โ0.3 pts | +3.3 pts |
That contrast is my main reason to treat Newcastle as two separate clubs in this market. The same half-time scoreline means different things at St James' Park and on the road.
Exhibit CLevel at half-time away is Newcastle's weak spot
This chart compares how often Newcastle win from level or behind at half-time against the league average. Level at home, they win 40.4% from 166 matches, against the league's 35.8%. Level away, it drops to 17.7% from 141 matches, against 27.6% for the league. That is the biggest gap in the chart, and the range around it still sits clear of the league figure.
Trailing at the break, they come back slightly less often than average. At home they win 7.2% (n=83, league 10.5%) and away 5.1% (n=136, league 6.1%). The home figure rests on fewer than 100 matches, so the range is wide. I'd read that row as a rough guide rather than a firm finding.
95% ranges on the club rate; rows under 100 matches are wide.

The main caveat applies here and throughout. These are historical rates, not a system. Squads and managers change, and Newcastle weren't in the top flight in 2009/10 or 2016/17, so those seasons are missing.
Exhibit DThe middle era dragged Newcastle's lead-holding down
Splitting the sample into three seven-season blocks shows how much the club has moved. From 2005/06โ2011/12 they led at half-time in 25.0% of 228 matches and held 80.7% of those leads. From 2012/13โ2018/19 they led just as often, but held only 64.9%. Win/Win fell to 16.2% and Draw/Draw to 11.8%.
The latest block, 2019/20โ2025/26, is the strongest of the three. They led at the break in 30.8% of 266 matches, went Win/Win 24.1% and held 78.0% of leads. Wins from behind rose from 2.9% (n=68) in the first block to 9.5% (n=74) in the latest, though both samples are small.
| Seasons | Matches | Led at HT | Win/Win | Held lead | Won from behind | Draw/Draw |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2005/06โ2011/12 | 228 | 25.0% | 20.2% | 80.7% | 2.9% (n=68) | 17.5% |
| 2012/13โ2018/19 | 228 | 25.0% | 16.2% | 64.9% | 5.2% (n=77) | 11.8% |
| 2019/20โ2025/26 | 266 | 30.8% | 24.1% | 78.0% | 9.5% (n=74) | 16.5% |
Overall, Newcastle held 75.0% of 196 half-time leads against 75.8% for the league. That near-average figure blends a weak middle era with two good ones. I'd lean on the latest block more than the full-sample average.
Dossier verdict
Case closed- Discount level away games
When Newcastle are level at half-time away, they have won only 17.7% against a league rate of 27.6%. Draw/Win away runs โ4.3 points below average, so it needs a generous price.
- Respect home Draw/Win
At home, Draw/Win is Newcastle's biggest edge on the league at +4.1 points, and level home games convert at 40.4%. This is the HT/FT route where their record has been strongest.
- Weight the recent era
The latest block shows Newcastle leading at the break 30.8% of the time and holding 78.0% of leads. That compares with 64.9% held in the middle era, so full-sample averages can undersell them.
